Dating Apps and Background Screening: Do We Really Know Our Dates?

A survey by Which has revealed that 60 percent of people believe they have encountered a fake dating profile but only 30 percent chose to report this to the online dating platform in question. The site with the highest number of fake profiles was Tinder. Some dating apps, such as Match.com, Harmony, and Gatsby, include background checks as part of their paid subscriptions, which seek to confirm publicly available information like name, address, DOB, and, in some cases, criminal record information. But free dating apps, such as Plenty of Fish, state in their terms and conditions that background checks are not carried out. This could be changing in the future, but it is important to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviors and protect yourself by creating a unique email address, not sharing personal details, and never sending money to people met online.
