Prior to joining the background screening industry Aashish worked in the Pharmaceutical, Telecom and BPO industries.

Aashish shared that it was by sheer luck that he ended up in the Background Screening Industry 11 years ago. He note that the job was meant for someone else and the person that was suppose to take the position moved away by the time the opportunity had arrived. This afforded him a great opportunity which he found to be very rewarding and having had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in the industry. He said, I had a plethora of learning opportunities and working in the background screening industry has been quite exciting.

In 2013, he decided to team with his co-founder and started Netrika with just 3 employees and a very small office in a basement. Today, I am glad to say that we have 150+ employees with PAN India presence and 3 global offices.

With a very big smile he shared, I love the challenges and diversity that comes with the background screening industry. It provides the opportunity to interact and learn from people all around the world, as well as the opportunity of conducting background checks in different territories.

Turning the conversation to the business Aashish shared the companys mission:

We help clients protect capital, assets & people in areas of Global Fraud Investigation, Forensics & Reputation Due Diligence, Cyber Forensics Anti Bribery & corruption consulting, Intelligence gathering, Background checks, Key personnel Integrity Checks, IPR investigations & Enforcement actions, Asset search, Security Audits & Training’s Consulting and so on.

He was also happy to share that the company has just rolled out their Online portal for Civil/Criminal court record checks and KYC checks in India which will give their clients quicker turnaround times and lower cost. He added that they are in the process of rolling out mobile apps and will be releasing some very interesting AI based solutions shortly.

In response to my favorite question about whats coming down the road that will impact the background screening industry, he pondered for a moment and then said, I strongly believe that things are changing globally, and I can foresee Background checks playing a more integral part with its scope widening from just normal employee verification to a necessity for everyone. Privacy and Security will become an industry- wide focus, likely from headline-making data breach(s). Laws controlling how/when background checks are used, such as Ban-the-Box and Fair Chance Acts, will expand at an increasingly rapid pace.

He added, Another major change that I foresee is the use of technology and digital tools with data handling and integration of AI. The domains that seems farfetched today will soon be available digitally and accessible from anywhere in the world.

Turning the discussion back to him personally, he shared that the last book he had read was The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. He noted that he was surprised by the vividness and vivacity of the writing. The pages kept turning as if by themselves, and I was disappointed that the book ran out so soon.

Interesting enough, the person he most likely would like to meet is Mother Teresa noting that she possessed the most unique quality of unconditional care and love in abundance. He would have liked to have gained a greater understanding about how she got the passion for helping others with all the difficulties and challenges and still expect nothing in return

Finally, before closing the interview he graciously shared his favorite quote: You are only limited by your own imagination- by Benny Bellamacina. It inspires you to overcome your own insecurities and rise above all.
