Ken Kunsman, Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer, International Screening Solutions, Inc |
Grab a latte and pull up a chair and join us for a great interview with Ken Kunsman, Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer, International Screening Solutions, Inc.
Ken shared that before coming into the employment background screening industry he was a newspaper reporter for 10 years, and smiled as he said “there are too many stories from those days to share in this interview.” After that he spent 10 years developing oral fluid drug screening products at a company in Pennsylvania which he help grow to 200 employees and $40 million in revenue. During his tenure with this company he was part of an amazing team to launch and manage a product called Intercept, which changed the way people thought about employment drug screening.
Moving to the employment background screening industry seem like a logical progression from his 10 years in the drug-screening industry. He first joined a management team building an end-to-end solution for recruitment strategy, screening and software. That experience gave him insight to the industry’s best potential. In 2015, he joined International Screening Solutions because their global sanctions, PEP, and adverse media screening tool taps into the industry potential and he added “he thinks it is perfect for our wholesale business model.”
He pondered for a moment and then share that he “sees great similarities in their WorldWatch Plus product for breaking the perceived limits on how companies can monitor their global relationships to the earlier product launch that changed an industry.
One of the things he really likes about the background screening industry is the close-knit screening community gives a competitive advantage to companies that operate with higher ethics and quality standards. He smiled as he said, “It is an honor when CRAs say we provide services at the same high standards to which they hold themselves.”
Turning the dialogue to the company he shared International Screening Solution’s vision:
“Our vision is to lead the marketplace in collecting and delivering global risk management data, and our daily mission is to protect and polish our reputation for quality, compliance and being easy to work with. Leading the way is our SaaS-based global sanctions, PEP and media screening tool, WorldWatch Plus.”
He shared an example of how they actualize this vision citing a recent example of their WorldWatch Plus tool helping a client to conduct due diligence on 7 million entities in about two weeks, which is an example of its game-changing impact.
The company was recently named to the Inc. list of fastest-growing private firms which Ken said was “exciting because growth in our business is directly correlated to growth in our clients’ businesses.”
He added “International Screening Solutions will continue to evolve as a data solution provider. In the next three years, our WorldWatch Plus product will augment the screening packages of leading CRAs, product companies and platform providers, because we have the most comprehensive and compatible offering in the marketplace.”
In response to my favorite question about looking into his crystal ball to project what he sees coming down the road for the industry he thought and then said, “The industry is clearly growing more global, with more and more companies wanting to expand their screening programs outside their home countries. Companies will expect more information faster, and post-event screening will become as important as pre-event screening. The crystal ball is telling me our industry needs to lead the way in creating global standards for screening and verifications. You’ll notice I said “standards” not “regulations.” If we take the lead to thoughtfully govern ourselves, the regulators will take notice and adopt the best practices. NAPBS understands this.”
Turning the dialogue back to him personally he share he had just finished a biography on John Adams and started one on Ben Franklin. The last business book he read was “Leadership Excellence,” by Pat Williams, a senior VP with the NBA’s Orlando Magic. He shared an interesting tidbit: he reads the action/adventure novels his teenage daughters are reading, which is the prerequisite in his family, if you want to see the movie.
The two people that he feels honor to have met are Lee Iacocca, a fellow Lehigh University alum, and Ken Iverson, then-CEO of Nucor Steel. Each had brilliant business vision and great leadership skills, but more importantly they each had a humility that grounded their thinking.
Before closing the interview he shared his favorite quote, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Theodore Roosevelt
