Despite the argument that a review of a candidate’s credit history is an invasion of privacy, it is important to understand that this is an important part of the hiring process. A credit check allows employers see things like a candidate’s ability or inability to handle their money, whether or not they can make major financial decisions, how they have managed one of life’s biggest responsibilities, and links between derogatory marks and potential criminal behavior. These can be important factors when determining if an employee should handle the company’s money and if they can be trusted. Anytime a credit check will be used as part of the hiring process, state and federal guidelines should be followed.
