Although it can take time to verify a prospect’s education, it can potentially make an organization more effective, productive and mitigate risk. The process, which can take up to 30 days in some cases if a school is no longer in business or the records are older than 10 years, involves confirmation of a candidate’s academic, certification, and/or licensure-related claims. There are, however, legal requirements, so employers should become familiar with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
