At the time Clarissa Windham-Bradstock, CEO/Chief People Officer of Any Lab Test Now, authored a piece on navigating workplace drug testing, 33 states had legalized marijuana for medical use and 10 for recreational means. The direct access lab testing company offered a few guiding words for employers who want to better understand changing drug laws and adopt the best drug testing options. Education and information are key and the company suggests learning the facts through the Drug Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA); understanding the costs by considering how absenteeism, increased health care expenses, lost productivity and workplace accidents and injuries could be affected; knowing the law in each state; stating a clear policy; and developing a good relationship with a drug testing company.
