Drugs in the Workplace: Combating a National Crisis with Employment Screening

The US Surgeon General and the National Safety Council (NSC) recently reported that “one in 13 working adults have an alcohol use disorder” and about $74 is lost each year from reduced productivity. Additionally, prescription drug use, such as opioids, is estimated to account for $25-$53 billion in lost productivity, varying by industry, salary range and gender. Missed time is one of the main factors affecting the workplace, as well as the cost to hire and re-train new employees. On the flip side, it has been estimated that for every employee who is identified and that receives treatment, employers can save nearly $3,200. Employers should implement a plan by adopting a customized policy of testing, monitoring and treating.
