A Ban the Box ordinance recently was passed in New Orleans that will prohibit the City and City contractors from asking potential employees about their criminal history in initial job applications. Effective March 1, 2019, the ban is similar to a policy that was passed in 2014 for classified and unclassified jobs in all City departments, boards, agencies and commissions. Criminal background checks still will be conducted and final decisions will be based upon relevant information.
